Project name: EALING - European flagship Action for coLd ironING in ports
Duration: 01/06/2020 – 31/12/2023
Project summary
In the context of the new European Green Deal aiming to prepare the transition to zero greenhouse gas emissions as transport represents 25% of the emission in the European Union, the electrification of the maritime transport is a key challenge to move towards a more competitive and sustainable TEN-T Maritime Network in the future.
In line with this policy framework, the Global Project “European flagship action for cold ironing in ports” (EALING) expresses the need to accelerate the effective deployment of On-shore Power Supply (OPS) solutions in the EU maritime ports and aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Assessing operational and environmental performances of the ports participating in EALING consortium, in charging different ships (Ro-Ro, Ro-Pax, Containerships, Passengers ships)
- Contributing to the further development of a common EU harmonised and interoperable framework for deployment of OPS infrastructure and equipment in the ports with close cooperation between all the stakeholders of the maritime sector, in line with the EU technical, legal and regulatory framework
- Leading all the necessary technical, environmental, socio-economic and financial studies in order to accelerate the preparation and launch of the works phase on OPS infrastructure
- Implementing OPS infrastructure and equipment in at least 16 EU ports belonging to different sea basins: Mediterranean, Black Sea, Atlantic and North Sea.
Protasis scope
In the framework of the EALING project, PROTASIS S.A. performs the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies for the Shore-Side Electricity (SSE) infrastructure for the five ports of the consortium: Piraeus (GR), Rafina (GR), Burgas (BG), Varna (BG) and Constanta (RO). These studies are delivering the engineering package and the other technical assessments needed for tender document preparation.
The scope included the main primary and secondary electrical equipment, determined the best Cable Management System (CMS) arrangements, estimated the costs for procurement and installation of the future SSE, and involved technical design studies. These studies provided planning design, finalized specifications for equipment and infrastructure, in line with international standards IEC 80005-1/2/3, and ensured the compatibility of the port-to-vessel interconnection.
