Project name: ELEMED - ELectrification of the Eastern MEDiterranean area
Duration: 01/04/2016 – 31/03/2018
Project summary
The overall objective of the Motorways of the Sea (MoS) Action, including the pilot On-shore Power Supply (OPS) installation, is the introduction of shore produced electricity and its use as a propulsion alternative for vessels in the South-East Mediterranean. In this manner shipping will access more sustainable, greener sources of energy like renewables. The minimization of emissions for a more sustainable and efficient transportation, addressing mobility and isolation barriers for remote communities, render this effort a decisive step in setting the right technical specifications and study the available, proven technology in order to proceed with specific applications by 2020 and beyond.
The specific objective of the Action is to analyze and assess all necessary requirements for facilitating the introduction of cold ironing in four ports of the South East Mediterranean area: Port of Piraeus (Greece), Port of Killini (Greece), Port of Kopper (Slovenia) and Port of Limassol (Cyprus). A pilot testing of cold ironing and electrification on a real vessel will be carried out in the Port of Killini.
Protasis scope
As part of this initiative, PROTASIS conducted the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies for the deployment of the “Cold Ironing” system at the ports of Piraeus, Killini, and Vasilikos (Cyprus), and also developed a pilot “Cold Ironing” installation at a designated berth in Killini port.
